During 2020, the strange year when we all endured a global pandemic, I rekindled my life-long interest in songwriting, as an enjoyable distraction from the stress and concerns of the COVID impacts to our home business.
I started by working on a song that I had originally recorded on a dodgy cassette player over 30 years ago. At the time the song was called “Belonging”.
The lyrics were too cheesy and there was only a single verse repeated twice, so it became one of many abandoned first drafts, but listening again I liked the memories and images of my childhood that it was bringing back.
So 30+ years later I finished the song, making a few tweaks, adding a second verse and chorus, a middle section and a lead break – basically I rewrote the song – and renamed it “Back Home”. Finally my song that took over 30 years to write was finished, just shy of my 60th birthday!
Compared to the ‘old days’ of creating overdubs with two cheap cassette tape recorders running at random speeds, screwing up the pitch each time I wanted to add a new track and requiring constant guitar re-tunes, I found recording in 2020 was much more enjoyable.
Unfortunately my guitar playing skills had not improved a lot over the years so dozens of bad takes and blistered fingers were required to get each layer, but overall it was great fun.
I then moved on to creating more new songs during the year and ended up calling the musical project “2020 Hindsight” – an EP with five finished original songs.
The songs have now been released on all online streaming services and I can now look forward to the real possibility of retiring on a few double-shot flat whites from the royalties expected to roll in from around the world.
It was great fun writing music however, and learning new ways to record, in this horrible pandemic year of 2020.
Definitely a nice distraction from work, in the year I also turned 60.
